Here are some pictures of Sonic when I got him back to my place when I bought it in November 2007.
It was pretty standard, not bad but needed some work doing to it.
The first thing I did was to strip the entire interior out of the car so I could Dynamat all the metal panels for sound deadening, about £170 worth in all. It makes the car panels more solid and stop's the distortion of music.
Once I had done all of this, I then ran all my sound system cables from the battery to the boot. I used 0 gauge wire for the 2 Amp's as I was going to be pulling some power on the audio system.
The alarm was also installed at this point as the interior was out.
One off the most important item for any modified car!
I went for a Clifford concept 650V2 with some extras.
I then bought a complete second hand EK9 interior from Japperformanceparts in Crawley and so the entire interior from the Vti was sold and I installed the steering wheel, Gauges, pedals, short shifter and gear knob.
This was not as easy as I thought at the time as the chassis and rear seats and carpet are different from JDM cars compared to UK spec.
The 99 VTi facelifts have a ridged steel brace that goes across the rear bench seat (Weighs in at about 30-40kg); this stopped me fitting the rear seats and carpet, as they were all a different shapes. So that was unbolted and taken down the tip witch allowed me to install the entire interior.
I also installed some JL components in the front doors and built some custom fibreglass door pods, covered in red Alcantara to match the seats. Also I bought an Alpine DVD monitor and I-pod controller and mounted that in the dash.
I then started on my boot install. I decided I wanted a small lightweight install that had a bit of everything in it to match up with the rest of the car. My first thought was carbon. I managed to get a sheet of 0.5mm carbon sheet 1.5 x 1.5 meters and covered the custom MDF fibreglass box. I mounted the 2 amps, power cap and installed the rear brace and rear seats. The whole boot install was constructed with fibreglass and MDF by me, and took about 4 days in total too do.
It does Sounds the Nuts!
That is the entire interior done.
I then started the exterior modifications.
The car came with the front/rear lights and lips so I added the grill, Wind deflectors, Advan RG2 Replica Alloys with Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 Tyres, clear indicators,
HID 8000K, EK9 folding mirrors with re-wired heated glass, fogs, rear EK9 plate surround, carbon bonnet with Aero-Catch bonnet pins, carbon EK9 style spoiler.
Engine and chassis modifications were next.
I bought most of the items for the car from Faz at FunkeyPower. Over the years he has sorted me out some nice items at a great price too. Anything you need he can get, even if its not held in stock he can get it very quickly.
Next I updated all the bushes on the car with the Energy Suspension kit. Also the engine mount inserts were done.
I spent about a week installing the energy bush kit. I would not recommend this too anyone, ITS HARD!
I had to get a garage to press the original bushes out of the lower arms. It took 4 1/2 tones of force in a press them out.
The car does however handle like its on rails now, so worth doing it.
The engine bushes give out more vibration too as there stiffer now, so you can feel more noise in the car.
I then upgraded all the original breaking system with aftermarket parts and EK9 parts along with the master cylinder. I then installed the coilovers, LCA’s, ARB’s and I installed the camber kits and got them aligned.
For my Engine conversion I then went to HOND-R after talking to loads off people about there good work and reputation. Maz and Russell Installed a JDM B18C Engine in the car, along with some upgrades along the way and a nice new paint job..
Also I installed a Mugen twin-loop system before i went to them with a JDM decat.
This one is too prove that Russle does work aswell not just Maz!
The blokes at Hond-R are a great team, they do work really hard and are worth the money!
The Mugen manifold is not on the car yet. But it will be soon.
Of course this was with help from my lovely other half who allowed me too spend more money on my car and not on her.
Current car:More to come......
James.
